For 10x10, we were faced with the task of creating 10 films in 10 days- a feat which allowed me to diversify my skills and try new things every day. Before the project began I thought of a few ideas I could do each day, but didn't necessarily have to stick with them each day.
Day 1: Typical Vampire Love Story
I used traditional paper and pencil for this animation as it was the first day of the project and was something I had not done for a while, as well as being the easiest form to set up. This film was originally with no sound as it was the first day and no composers had created music yet. However it was pleasing to see that multiple composers created different scores for it, and the moods were different depending on the tone of the music. As there was not much time to set up a serious planning and experimentation, I used my sketchbook to make thumbnail storyboards and started the actual animation process without much refining. Overall I think that this is a good start for the project.
Day 2: Long Distance
I based the animation on the fact that it was Valentines' Day. I wanted to experiment with the rostrum camera and paper animation so I created all the parts of the animation with watercolour and fine liner. One problem I had with this is the issue with keeping the parts stuck down, so I tried to use blu tac and masking tape underneath each of the parts. However in the final product the shadows look quite charming and add depth to the 2D assets.
Day 3: Birdbath
I used today as an animation test for my Two Characters and a Setting project, as I had completed the rig and models in the previous week. The animation was loosely based on the story from the Two Characters project, as well as the music that composer Moutzouris created on the first day of 10x10.
Day 4: The Magic Number
This one is based on some sketches I brought into this project pre-prepared. I focussed in character animation and keyframes, rather than creating a narrative or finding music. The choppy keyframe animation was something I wanted to experiment for my Two Characters Project, as there is a scene within a thought bubble that I wanted to portray in rough 2D animation.
Day 5: 21st Century Etiquette
Based on the prompt for today, I took the idea of how modern society reacts (ie. through messages) and placed it into a medieval setting.
Day 6: Train Journey
As I had gone into the project with the intention to try new methods of animation, I used today as a way to experiment with live action. I filmed and sketched everything on the train, and tried to create a boil effect by drawing the same doodle twice, however due to lack of a lightbox it didn't turn out right, so I traced over one of the sketches in Photoshop.
Day 7: Satellite Song
Based on the sounds by Hazel Turnbull, I created a scenic animation inspired loosely on other ECA students' work. I wanted to improve in backgrounds and digital painting, but added minimal animation to add life to the forest.
Day 8: Calm
I used today to experiment with adding 2D objects drawn on Photoshop into Maya, as well as water animation. I rigged an old character that I had created for practice in first semester, and though I didn't alter the paint weights as accurate as I should have, I still think that the minimal animation adds to the calming atmosphere of the film. I didn't create a storyboard for this film as I wanted the music to lead the film, and thought I should just do whatever I thought without thinking about it too hard, just to see what would come out.
Day 9: Doris
Based on that day's events (which cost me a few hours), I created a short animation on photoshop playing with a limited complimentary colour palette that captures the dismal mood of a dull rainy day. There was limited animation, but I am proud of the movement of the water droplet falling from the station sign, as the droplet forming and eventually dripping off the sign was fun to pace out, and satisfying to watch in a loop. Next time I should boil the actual rain with more than 2 frames as it came out choppy without much other animation to distract viewers from.
Day 10: Lucky Cat
Unfortunately I was unable to finish a film for today, as I wanted to model and rig something from scratch. I wanted to emulate the low-poly style that I had planned to use for my Two Characters project. The plan was to create a simple yet aesthetically pleasing shot of a lucky cat on a window sill in the evening light, however, I was unable to finish. However I feel that this is a project that I can easily revisit in the future as the assets are pretty much there, and only need some tweaking, animation, and a background.

The 2 weeks that the project took allowed me to experiment with new methods and ways of animation and putting a film together, many styles which I probably wouldn't consider for a full project, such as the use of the rostrum camera and live action. It also allowed me to reinforce practice on a daily basis with software such as After Effects and Premier, which I find that I struggle to remember if I do not use them enough. Can't wait for next year!
